Developing the Human Resource Supply Base through Dualized Training |
On March 6, 2008 HCC hosted a breakfast forum organized by the European IT Service Center (EITSC) with funding from Hanns Seidel Foundation and the European Union. The event entitled: “Developing the Human Resource Supply Base through Dualized Training” brought together 50 participants from the academe, government, BPO, IT, and human resource sectors. The breakfast forum featured three significant case studies showcasing dualized training as an effective means of addressing the skills gap being experienced by today’s manpower sector. Dualized training makes use of two training venues, the school and its partner company to ensure that students are given equal amounts of training in theory and practice.
Presenters included Asia-Pacific College and Gurango Software who featured their Project-Based Learning program for bachelor degree IT courses where students are given projects to develop and implement with the partner company. MFI Foundation, Inc. and Smart Communications also presented a similar initiative with their two-year associate IT programs. The third case from De La Salle University featured dualized training in their Applied Corporate Management program under the College of Business and Economics where students are given the opportunity to work in partner companies.
Among the three cases, it was observed that a dualized curriculum, depending on the length of training, improves the skills required of graduates to qualify for jobs. As dualized training is based competencies, students learn the job hands-on rather than just the theories associated with it. Students who have undergone dualized training exhibited superior communication skills, clearer career direction, and enhanced decision-making skills.
The ultimate aim of dualized training is to ensure that students get the best possible training with the assistance of industry partners. In the end, all partners and the students benefit from the program.
EITSC is presently working with University of Makati to develop a competency-based curriculum for contact centers. Dualized training will not work without the essential components: the school and the company. EITSC networks with schools and companies to recommend curriculum enhancements in order to dualize existing curricula.
