Philippines: Destination of Choice for Backroom Operations

According to a Gartner study, the Philippines is a major contender in high-tech services within the next five years. The country is set to benefit from a projected $1 billion a year industry for exported IT services.

E-services include outsourced call center, software development, systems, integration, medical transcription, digital animation, and development and maintenance of regional procurement systems. The study identified the following advantages of the local IT sector: English proficiency, proficient work force, government support, improved infrastructure, business cost and culture similar to that of the United States.

While Industry leaders share these findings, they remain wary for a concerted effort both from industry and government remains lacking. Efforts need to be fortified to promote the country to local and international clients as a destination of choice for IT and IT-enabled services. The study confirms that the Philippines is indeed a serious contender to India.
